Newton Technology Group — chiller COP monitoring

Chiller system real-time monitoring and water treatment optimisation

WSmart partnered with Newton Technology Group to make chiller performance visible and measurable across active plant rooms.

WSmart wireless IoT monitoring of a multi-chiller plant with LoRaWAN sensors and cloud analytics

Executive summary

Newton Technology Group

Central chiller plants and industrial water treatment are critical HVAC kit in commercial, industrial and healthcare sites. Good COP depends on continuous tracking of chilled-water supply and return temperatures, condenser loops, flow rates and power.

Newton Technology Group needed clear proof of its water-treatment and energy-saving technology. WSmart linked wireless LoRaWAN telemetry to the WSmart.io cloud so operators and facility engineers could see live performance, track COP automatically and check anomalies as they happened.

Long-range LoRaWAN sensors capture data from active multi-chiller plants — including setups such as Mydin Meru CH1–CH4 — and stream it to one dashboard for savings verification and performance checks.

The challenge

The challenge

  • Complex thermal and multi-loop telemetry: capture multiple parameters at the same time, including chilled-water supply/return temperatures of 7.95°C / 10.49°C, condenser-water loops of 28.5°C / 32.17°C, and condenser-water flow rates up to 482.62 m³/hr.
  • Prohibitive cable installation costs: traditional wired monitoring would require intrusive conduit runs across large mechanical plant rooms, increasing deployment time and capital expenditure.
  • Real-time COP and power computation: engineers and energy auditors needed automated COP (approximately 4.06 at 303 kW demand and 346.59 RTh cooling load), accumulated kWh and carbon-offset calculations without manual log sheets.
  • Proactive anomaly diagnostics: operating teams needed immediate alerts when temperature differentials dropped or flow restrictions threatened chiller efficiency and equipment life.

Architecture pillar

The solution · WSmart.io cloud + wireless LoRaWAN

WSmart deployed end-to-end IoT data capture and cloud views for Newton Technology Group’s chiller water-treatment sites.

01

Wireless LoRaWAN data acquisition

Non-intrusive temperature, flow and power meters connect through LoRaWAN gateways. Long-range wireless crosses thick concrete and metal enclosures without complex field wiring.

02

Instant system visualisation

Operators and engineers see supply/return ΔT, live power (kW) and other key metrics on desktop or mobile web.

03

Automated energy analytics and COP tracking

The platform computes live COP curves, hourly cooling loads (RTh), monthly electricity use and monetary/carbon savings against baseline.

04

Cloud reporting and alarm handling

Historical logs, trend graphs and threshold alerts give engineering teams a traceable record and a faster response to anomalies.

Outcome

Results

  • Effortless verification of energy savings: clear, auditable WSmart.io dashboards show kWh and CO₂ reductions.
  • Rapid, low-cost field deployment: wireless LoRaWAN eliminated costly multi-core cabling in plant rooms and shortened commissioning time by more than 65%.
  • 24/7 chiller health optimisation: visibility into chilled-water and condenser-water flow distributions helps engineers fine-tune pump speeds and maintain optimal COP values.
  • Centralised multi-chiller oversight: facility managers can supervise multiple chiller units, including the Mydin Meru CH1–CH4 series, through one unified web portal.
